The Drawing Reporter Part 1 (Semester 1/Semester 2)

WEEKS 11-12

Independent Study - Drawing Reporter

PART ONE

For part one our task was to create a series of drawings of two contrasting locations. I chose the Hive and Worcester Cathedral, as I thought that the Hive, which is very modern, would contrast well with the traditional and historical forms of the cathedral. I think this is conveyed accurately through my work, as I'd like to think I managed to capture the essence of each building.

This is an example of how the task was beneficial in terms of planning composition and choosing mediums. I found that it encouraged me to think about medium choice a lot more in terms of the subject matter - for example, for intricate patterns and interior design I ended up using fine pens or pencils a lot, while with exteriors or looser sketches from further away, charcoal and expressive mark making worked better. This created a variety through the work which is interesting to see.

Some of my favourite drawings from this homework which I think are most effective are the ones where I used white pencil on dark paper. This is something I haven't really done up till this point, despite it being so simple! I think it works especially well because you can achieve a high level of detail, but it still has that striking simplicity of linework.

Unfortunately, a negative of this work is that I forgot one requirement of the brief, which was to use a colour palette limited to 2 colours. This shows me I need to read the brief more carefully in future!! The pieces where I used colour could definitely have been improved if I had stuck to this rule, as I think some of them appear overworked and too busy.
